Diana Wynne Jones
Two novels in this one, the star of one is a supporting character in the other. Basic story: "Magic is pretty much everywhere, here are two aggressively underwhelming pushover boys who get their innocence exploited in plot-critical ways."
First novel does feature a grand candidate for Fictional Character You Most Want To Smack So Hard They Explode. Mostly it's about a wet noodle of a boy and his grand quest to pout until he becomes special, which he does.
Second novel was much better, more engaging, but still features a great big "OH COME ON PAY ATTENTION" moment that had me waiting the entire rest of the book for the main character to notice it. Eventually he did and we could get on with things, but by then the book was basically over. Oh well.
Will I read it again? If we get the other two and I've forgotten how these go. Otherwise, no.
